Rcsm2_010508Walgreen’s isn’t the only drugstore sensing opportunity in Red Bank’s pulse.

A Middlesex County pharmacist hopes to open a drugstore on Broad Street, almost directly opposite the vacant former longtime home of the Professional Pharmacy, which closed up shop in December after 61 years in town.

Kamesh Patel’s application to open what he’s calling the Red Bank Family Pharmacy landed at the borough planning office Monday, less than two weeks after the giant Walgreen’s chain filed to build a 14,000-square-foot drugstore at the former Rassas Buick location, also on Broad Street.

Sad day at Red Bank’s Professional Pharmacy.

A mainstay for late-night-prescriptions and other medical needs for 61 years, the Broad Street apothecary and gift shop is closing down Tuesday at 10 p.m., and a stream damp-eyed well-wishers and bargain hunters have been flowing through the store to say goodbye to old friends, staffers said.

“We have customers who’ve moved out out town but still come back,” said Mary Respol, the store’s most veteran employee. “It’s family.”

Professional Pharmacy, a Red Bank fixture for more than six decades, is closing.

Owner Michael Yura tells redbankgreen that the store’s pharmacy accounts have been sold to Rite Aid and will be transferred to the chain’s Red Bank store on Water Street.

Meantime, the store’s extensive gift and greeting card business will be closed, he said
