R-FH STEAMROLLS ST. ROSE, 72-35

Rumson-Fair Haven Regional’s boys cruised to an opening-round win in the Shore Conference Tournament Tuesday. It was the only game played in either bracket as morning snow cancelled school across most of the Shore Conference. Getting the game in on Tuesday gives the Bulldogs a critical day of rest as they get set for a showdown with Red Bank Regional on Thursday night in Little Silver. RFH: SOURLIS, STANT MARK MILESTONES

Rumson-Fair Haven girls basketball coach George Sourlis became the Shore Conference’s all-time winningest coach Tuesday in a game that also saw Villanova-bound senior Grace Stant score her 1,000th career point. The 66-23 road win over Raritan was victory number 626 for Sourlis, who’s coached the Lady Bulldogs for 29 years, and moved his total past that of legendary CBA boys basketball coach Ed Wicelinski. Both milestones were celebrated on the hardwood, and Shore Sports Zone was there to capture it all.

HOCKEY: RFH TOPS ST. ROSE, 8-6

John Monteferrante scored four goals to give Rumson-Fair Haven an 8-6 win over Saint Rose at the Red Bank Armory Monday. The Bulldogs scored three goals in the final 1:32 to put the game away. Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights.

RFH is the 16th seed in the Shore Conference Hockey Tournament and will face number-one seed Red Bank Catholic Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Armory. Tourney matchups are here.

HOCKEY: RBC TOPS RFH ON ARMORY ICE

Red Bank Catholic raced out to a 4-0 first-period lead, but needed three goals in the third to gain an 8-5 win over Rumson-Fair Haven. The Bulldogs scored three straight goals in the second period to get within one goal, and scored early in the third to make it a 5-4 game before RBC pulled away. The Caseys’ Todd Goehring and the Bulldogs’ Brendan Ban both reached their 100th career point. Alec Mintz had a hat trick for RBC, scoring the final two goals. The Caseys improve to 12-4-2 on the season, while the Bulldogs now stand at 6-6-1. Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights.

BARRY SCORES 24 IN R-FH ROMP AT HOME

Brendan Barry scored 24 points in Rumson-Fair Haven’s 67-29 home win against Jackson Memorial Wednesday. Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights.

The Bulldogs, now 10-2 for the season,  hit the road on Friday for an “A” Central game against Manasquan.

HOCKEY: HEROICS LIFT SJV TO TIE WITH RFF

Matt Kidney scored with 5.4 seconds left to earn Saint John Vianney of Middletown a 3-3 tie with Rumson-Fair Haven on the ice at the Red Bank Armory Monday. The RFH Bulldogs took a 3-2 lead with 3:04 to go in the third period when John Monteferrante went end to end and delivered a top-shelf backhand. But Saint John Vianney pulled the goalie in the final minute to set the stage for Kidney’s heroics, as seen here in these Shore Sports Zone video highlights.

RFH BARRY GRABS DEBUT SSZ GAME BALL

Rumson-Fair Haven guard Brendan Barry became the first recipient of a Shore Sports Zone Game Ball in high school hoops Wednesday, two days after he set a Boardwalk Showcase record with 34 points against Point Pleasant Beach at Long Branch High School.  Barry captured the voting from fans.  Every Sunday, SSZ lists the top performers from the week and lets the fans choose the most deserving player.

HOCKEY: RFF TOPS PPB/SQUAN AS DOWD SITS

Brendan Ban had four goals and three assists to lead Rumson-Fair Haven to an 11-3 win over Point Pleasant Beach/Manasquan at the Red Bank Armory Monday. Rob Garavante added a hat trick for RFH, who raced out to a 6-0 lead and led 7-1 at the end of two periods. Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights.

Point Pleasant Beach/Manasquan did not have head coach Jim Dowd behind the bench in the game. News 12 New Jersey reported that the former New Jersey Devils great is facing an allegations that he kicked a player in the back during last Wednesday’s game against Red Bank Regional at Jersey Shore Sports Arena. 

BARRY LIGHTS IT UP AS RFH TOPS SHORE

Brendan Barry put on a sensational show for the home crowd as Rumson-Fair Haven defeated Shore Regional, 56-46, in boys basketball Tuesday. Barry had seven three-pointers, including one from the next zip code. Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights.

RFH: BRIGGS WINS TOP SSZ SCHOLAR-ATHLETE

Rumson-Fair Haven’s Tucker Briggs had 102 tackles in his senior season, finishing his career with 212 and a role in back-to-back state championships. Even more impressive: his grade point average (4.7) and SAT score (2380, which puts him in the 99.95 percentile of the test’s takers). Those numbers and more earned Briggs the Shore Sports Zone trophy for Scholar-Athlete of the Year at a banquet dinner at IPlay America in Freehold Tuesday night.

DAWGS CHOMP THEIR WAY TO SECOND TITLE

RFH DAWGS REPEAT AS STATE CHAMPS

For the second straight year, the Rumson-Fair Haven Bulldogs are the top dogs of Central Jersey Group 2, winning the state title over Delaware Valley at Kean University Saturday.

In sometimes heavy rain, Charlie Volker ran for 161 yards and a score, and the Rumson-Fair Haven defense produced a touchdown and key turnovers in the shutout. And once again,  Shore Sports Zone has all the video highlights. (Video courtesy of Shore Sports Zone.)

RFH SLIPS IN MUD BOWL

It was a cold, wet affair as Rumson-Fair Haven and Shore Regional met in the first “Devil-Dawg Bowl” in West Long Branch Wednesday night. Turnovers were key. A Dawgs fumble on fourth and short in the final quarter set up the game’s longest run, a 23-yard romp by Doug Goldsmith to seal a 13-0 win for Shore. Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights.

Both schools play for sectional titles on December 6th at Kean University.  Shore Regional (10-1) takes on South Hunterdon at 10 a.m. while RFH (8-3) is the nightcap, taking on Delaware Valley at 7 p.m.

The Devil-Dawg Bowl is expected to be the start of a new tradition for RFH, replacing a longtime Thanksgiving rivalry with Red Bank Catholic.

RFH GIRLS, ALREADY CHAMPS, AIM HIGHER

Fresh off capturing the Group 2 State Championship Saturday, Rumson-Fair Haven’s field hockey team notched a 6-0 win over Shore Regional in the play-in game of the Tournament of Champions at Rider University Tuesday. 

Madison Maguire banged in four goals, highlighted by a first-half hat trick, with Lily Croddick and Abigail Donohue also scoring. Shore Sports Zone has the highlights.

RBC: TWO CASEYS ON SSZ GAME BALL BALLOT

Two Red Bank Catholic football players are in the running for a Week 10  Shore Sports Zone play-of-the-week game ball following the Casey’s first-round 62-7 playoff blowout of Bishop Eustace Friday. Linebacker Mike DeMonte and running back Tommy Spernal are among five Monmouth and Ocean county players on the ballot, with another eight players up for overall performance. Voting is open to the public. Check back here on Wednesday to learn who won.

RFH ADVANCES IN QUEST FOR SECOND TITLE

With a domineering 35-7 win over A.L. Johnson at home, the defending state champion Rumson-Fair Haven Bulldogs advanced in their quest for a second straight title Friday night.  Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights, including more stellar play from sophomore quarterback Mike O’Connor.

The Dawgs are at home again Friday night against Cinnaminson in a game to determine who goes on for the 2014 state title.

RFH VIES FOR STATE TITLE ON EBNER’S BIG D

Rumson-Fair Haven’s  field hockey team plays for a state championship on Saturday, and a big part of the squad’s best season in school history is six-foot-one Catie Ebner. Rich Chrampanis’ new video-based website, Shore Sports Zone, has a profile of the Villanova commit on the eve of the Lady Bulldogs’ Group 2 final against Madison. RFH: SECKLER GRABS SSZ GAME BALL

Rumson-Fair Haven running back Lucas Seckler’s 85-yard touchdown gallop in  the Bulldogs’ 41-6 win over Holmdel Friday night earned him more than 5,000 online votes and a  Shore Sports Zone play-of-the-week game ball Wednesday. Middletown North tight end/linebacker Troy Thompson also earned one as the week’s top overall performer, according to SSZ voters.

RFH enters the postseason Friday night with a first-round Central Jersey Group 2 game at home against A.L. Johnson of Clark, while Middletown North is on the road against Jackson Memorial in Group 4, both at 7 p.m. Friday. Count on SSZ to capture all the sizzling action on video.

RFH: 11 ATHLETES COMMIT TO COLLEGES

The ink, laughter and some tears flowed as 11 Rumson-Fair Haven student-athletes, including nine young women, committed to various colleges, where they’ll continue playing tennis, baseball, lacrosse and more starting next September. Shore Sports Zone has the full scoop, on video.
