HOCKEY: RBC’S HOEY NOTCHES 100TH POINT

Former New Jersey Devils great Jim Dowd was back coaching Manasquan/Point Pleasant Beach at Red Bank Armory Monday, but Red Bank Catholic’s Evan Hoey had five goals and picked up his 100th career point in RBC’s 10-0 win. HOCKEY: HEROICS LIFT SJV TO TIE WITH RFF

Matt Kidney scored with 5.4 seconds left to earn Saint John Vianney of Middletown a 3-3 tie with Rumson-Fair Haven on the ice at the Red Bank Armory Monday. The RFH Bulldogs took a 3-2 lead with 3:04 to go in the third period when John Monteferrante went end to end and delivered a top-shelf backhand. But Saint John Vianney pulled the goalie in the final minute to set the stage for Kidney’s heroics, as seen here in these Shore Sports Zone video highlights.

Red Bank Regional is an unexpected participant in a three-way tie for first in the Class B North boys’s basketball division after a 55-46 win over Colts Neck at Little Silver Thursday. Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights.

RFH BARRY GRABS DEBUT SSZ GAME BALL

Rumson-Fair Haven guard Brendan Barry became the first recipient of a Shore Sports Zone Game Ball in high school hoops Wednesday, two days after he set a Boardwalk Showcase record with 34 points against Point Pleasant Beach at Long Branch High School.  Barry captured the voting from fans.  Every Sunday, SSZ lists the top performers from the week and lets the fans choose the most deserving player.

HOCKEY: RFF TOPS PPB/SQUAN AS DOWD SITS

Brendan Ban had four goals and three assists to lead Rumson-Fair Haven to an 11-3 win over Point Pleasant Beach/Manasquan at the Red Bank Armory Monday. Rob Garavante added a hat trick for RFH, who raced out to a 6-0 lead and led 7-1 at the end of two periods. Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights.

Point Pleasant Beach/Manasquan did not have head coach Jim Dowd behind the bench in the game. News 12 New Jersey reported that the former New Jersey Devils great is facing an allegations that he kicked a player in the back during last Wednesday’s game against Red Bank Regional at Jersey Shore Sports Arena. 

BARRY LIGHTS IT UP AS RFH TOPS SHORE

Brendan Barry put on a sensational show for the home crowd as Rumson-Fair Haven defeated Shore Regional, 56-46, in boys basketball Tuesday. Barry had seven three-pointers, including one from the next zip code. Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights.

RBC TOPS CROSSTOWN RIVAL RBR IN HOOPS

Kevin Fazio had 17 points and four other Red Bank Catholic starters were in the double digits as the Caseys topped  crosstown rival Red Bank Regional 71-66 at RBC Saturday afternoon. The Bucs got 18 points from Sadiq Palmer but suffered their first loss of the season as the Caseys bounced back from a loss in the finals of the WOBM Christmas Classic to Toms River North with a divisional victory. TRN TOPS RBC IN WOBM FINAL

Mike Nyisztor had 16 points, including a pair of three-pointers in the fourth quarter, to pace Toms River North to a 50-45 win over Red Bank Catholic in the championship game of the boys division of the WOBM Christmas Classic in Toms River Tuesday night.  RBC came back from a seven-point deficit to take a 40-39 lead in the fourth quarter, but Nyisztor drained back-to-back threes to spark a 7-0 run. RBR CAPS HOME TOURNEY WITH OT STUNNER

Red Bank Regional, hosting a tournament in memory of Albert Martin, the student-athlete who died in 2012, pulled off a stunning tourney closer when it beat the defending state Tournament of Champions title holder St. Joe’s of Metuchen Tuesday night. Sadiq Palmer scored seven of his 16 points in overtime as the Bucs ended the Falcons’ 29-game wining streak by a score of 59-54. Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights.

 

BYRNE’S 23 HELP PUT RBC IN WOBM FINALS

In a game that went back-and-forth, the Red Bank Catholic boys’ basketball squad pulled off a 60-57 win over Freehold Township in the WOBM Christmas Classic at Toms River North High School Monday. Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights as Liam Byrne poured in 23 points for the Caseys.

The victory put RBC in the tournament championship game to be played against Toms River North at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

HOST RBR ADVANCES WITH WIN OVER SHORE

M’TOWN SOUTH GIVES COACH 300TH OVER RBC

Stephanie Kracz racked up 27 points as Middletown South’s girls’ basketball team notched a 59-45 victory over Red Bank Catholic in semifinal action of the WOBM Christmas Classic in Toms River Sunday. The victory marked a milestone for Coach Tom Brennan: his 300th win. Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights.

South will now face defending tournament champion Manasquan for the title on Tuesday.

RBC’S CELLA SCORES TD RUN OF THE YEAR

Nick Cella’s “pinball” scoring run for Red Bank Catholic against Manalapan on October 24 was the best TD run of the year in Monmouth and Ocean counties, according to viewers of Shore Sports Zone, the all-video online channel that debuted this year. And Cella’s honor was one of many at the first-ever SSZ All-Zone Banquet at IPlay America in Freehold Tuesday night.

RFH: BRIGGS WINS TOP SSZ SCHOLAR-ATHLETE

Rumson-Fair Haven’s Tucker Briggs had 102 tackles in his senior season, finishing his career with 212 and a role in back-to-back state championships. Even more impressive: his grade point average (4.7) and SAT score (2380, which puts him in the 99.95 percentile of the test’s takers). Those numbers and more earned Briggs the Shore Sports Zone trophy for Scholar-Athlete of the Year at a banquet dinner at IPlay America in Freehold Tuesday night.

CASEYS JOIN DAWGS AS STATE CHAMPS

In winning its first state championship since 1976, RBC joins podium-topping Rumson-Fair Haven, which won its division’s top prize for the second consecutive year on Saturday.

 

RBC BEATS DELBARTON FOR STATE TITLE

Led by quarterback Eddie Hahn and running back Tommy Spernal, Red Bank Catholic steamrolled Delbarton by a score of 45-20 for the state title in Non-Public, Group 3 football at MetLife Stadium in the Meadowlands Sunday night. Rich Chrampanis of Shore Sports Zone has the highlights. RFH DAWGS REPEAT AS STATE CHAMPS

For the second straight year, the Rumson-Fair Haven Bulldogs are the top dogs of Central Jersey Group 2, winning the state title over Delaware Valley at Kean University Saturday.
