PROPOSED SCHOOL TAX INCREASE: $40

Hot_topic

The owner of the average Red Bank home would pay $40.50 a year more in school taxes under a Board of Ed spending plan being readied for introduction tonight, today’s Asbury Park Press reports.

The budget is slated for a public hearing March 27, and for approval or rejection by voters April 17.

Meanwhile, the borough council is moving ahead with a spending plan that would increase the annual tax on the average home by $58. The average-valued residence in town is now $404,980 following the completion of a reassessment earlier this year.

The proposed school tax would increase the levy by 1 cent per $100 or real estate value, the Press reports.

From the story:

The district benefited from an additional $308,500 in state aid targeted for districts with significant numbers of children receiving free or reduced-cost lunches. That money will be used to enhance the prekindergarten and kindergarten classes, to hire a literacy coach, to enhance music programs and to start a world language program, [Superintendent Laura C.] Morana said.

The budget includes additional positions, some to be filled with new hires and some by teachers or staff who could transfer from jobs being eliminated, Morana said.

Teachers to be hired include a third-grade bilingual teacher, a literacy coach, a part-time music teacher and a full-time world language teacher.

The plan calls for $1.79 million to be transferred to the Red Bank Charter School, as required by the state, the Press also reports.
