SHREWSBURY WOMAN KILLED BY TRUCK
An 83-year-old woman attempting to cross Broad Street at Sycamore Avenue in Shrewsbury died yesterday after being struck by a dump truck, the Asbury Park Press says today.
The victim, Mary Honkonen, was pronounced dead at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune one hour after the 3:30p accident.
The Press, citing police, says Honkonen was crossing to the east side of Broad Street, also called Route 35, when she was hit by the truck as it made a left turn onto Broad. Police were interviewing witnesses in an effort to determine if the truck’s driver, 42-year-old Kevin Burke of Neptune, made the turn under a green left turn signal.
Honkonen was a longtime borough resident who had worked as a lunchroom aide at the borough’s elementary school, Capt. Timothy Spencer told the Press.
Witnesses to the accident are asked to call the investigating officer, Patrolman Michael Gallagher, at (732) 741-2500.
