Red Bank police say a man was slashed across the chest by an assailant while fishing from a bulkhead in Marine Park early Saturday morning.
The victim, a 28-year-old Cliffwood Beach man, told police the attack occurred during an apparent attempt to steal his fishing pole.
Police were alerted at 1:08a, and met the the victim nearby at Riverview Medical Center, where he’d driven himself for treatment after the attack.
The victim told Ptl. Michael Jastrzemski that he’d been fishing when he was approached by two unknown Hispanic males. While one engaged him in conversation to distract him, the second tried to make off with his fishing pole, police said.
When the victim confronted the thief, the first man slashed him across the chest with what police said was an unknown instrument.
Both of the suspects then fled on foot out of Marine Park. The victim was treated and released from Riverview for an incision to his chest.

One had black hair tied in a small pony tail, and was believed to be wearing blue jeans, a dark shirt and a dark pullover-type jacket; the second man was last seen wearing a black baseball hat, white tee shirt and blue jeans.
