The Asbury Park Press reports that the dolphin pod in the Shrewsbury River is heading north.

The U.S. Coast Guard and state Marine Police [are] giving them an escort and keeping recreational boaters away from the dolphins as they head north toward the bay.

Officials hopeful they will reach the bay today.

The newspaper also quotes Annie Gorgone, a dolphin identification expert from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, saying that the dozen or so mammals are feeding and socializing normally, and that swimming in a coastal river such as the Shrewsbury is normal behavior.

Gorgone was on a boat in the river this morning observing the dolphins, the Press reports.
