RAIN, SNOW, MAYBE SLEET IN FORECAST

Img_6332_2

A winter storm is expected to roll through New Jersey today.

Up to an inch or two of snow may accumulate by tonight, says the National Weather Service, which has a winter weather advisory in effect until midnight.

While much of inland central and northern Jersey may experience a mix of snow, sleet and rain throughout the day, totaling up to five inches of snow by day’s end, areas closer to the Shore are expected to see an inch or less. But a light coating of ice is possible by this evening, as patchy freezing rain and drizzle develop, the NWS says.

Needless to say, that could make for treacherous roads and walkways (reminiscent, perhaps, of conditions seen in the January, 2007 photo of Monmouth Street, Red Bank, above).

Here’s the rundown to Christmas day:

Today: Rain, snow, and sleet before 9am, then rain and snow between 9am and 10am, then rain after 10am. High near 39. Light wind becoming east between 12 and 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

Tonight: Rain likely before midnight, then areas of rain and snow showers. Cloudy, with a low around 29. Breezy, with a east wind between 17 and 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Saturday: A chance of snow showers and freezing drizzle before noon. Cloudy, with a high near 32. Northeast wind between 15 and 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

Saturday Night: A chance of snow before 4am, then a chance of snow and freezing rain. Cloudy, with a low around 29. East wind between 13 and 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Sunday: Freezing rain, possibly mixed with sleet before 9am, then rain. High near 39. East wind 10 to 15 mph becoming west. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Sunday Night: A chance of flurries. Mostly cloudy and breezy, with a low around 24.

Monday: A chance of flurries before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 33.

Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 20.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 34.

Tuesday Night: A chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 28. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Wednesday: A chance of rain and snow. Cloudy, with a high near 41. Chance of precipitation is 50%.
