NYT: ICE ROCKET READY TO ROAR

The New Jersey section of the New York Times had a feature story yesterday on the Rocket, the monster ice boat (shown at right) that’s been restored by members of the North Shrewsbury Ice Boat and Yacht Club down on the Navesink River.

From the article, authored by Red Bank’s own Colleen Dee Berry:

The Rocket, a behemoth Class 1 iceboat with a backbone of 50 feet and
900 square feet of sail, is poised to take the ice, after a lengthy and
loving restoration. There hasnÂ’t been an iceboat of this size on the
Navesink in decades. “Pray for ice,” said John Holian, president of the
nonprofit Rocket Ice Yacht Foundation. “We need 10 to 12 inches.”

And speaking of ice…

The National Weather Service forecasts single-digit temperatures later in the week, as the thermometer does some day-to-day bouncing around.

Today and tomorrow, though, are expected to be relatively mild. Here’s the rundown:

Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 37. Northwest wind between 9 and 14 mph.

Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 26. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph.

Tuesday: A
chance of showers after 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 42. South
wind between 7 and 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Tuesday Night: A
chance of snow showers before midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low
around 23. Breezy, with a southeast wind 5 to 8 mph becoming west
between 17 and 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 28. Blustery, with a northwest wind between 13 and 21 mph.

Wednesday Night: A chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 16. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Thursday: A chance of snow. Cloudy, with a high near 32. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 8.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 21.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 9.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 25.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 16.

Sunday: Partly sunny, with a high near 32.
