Police lead the man to the trap door in the theater’s roof.
A nearly two-hour standoff with a man who threatened to jump off the roof of the Two River Theater ended without incident Sunday evening.
The man, whom authorities did not identify, is a 46-year-old Red Bank resident and employee of the Bridge Avenue theater, said Police Captain Darren McConnell.
McConnell said a theater co-worker called them at 5:34p to report that the man, who was not on duty but had permission to be in the building, had gone onto the roof of the structure and was threatening to commit suicide by jumping.
The windowless brick tower is about four stories high and houses mechanical equipment.
Two police sergeants went to the roof through the sole access, a trap-style door, and tried without success to persuade the man to accompany them off the roof.
Around 7p, negotiator Detective Michael Clancy of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Emergency Response Team arrived and spoke to the man, who surrendered at 7:18p.
The man was taken to Riverview Medical Center for evaluation, McConnell said.
Bridge Avenue was briefly closed to traffic between Monmouth and West Front streets.
