An early blast of the summer doldrums, which arrived with a vengeance Wednesday, return to the Red Bank area Thursday for a second day of temperatures soaring into the mid-90s, the National Weather Service forecasts.

Here’s the wilting outlook, which anticipates gradual cooling Friday and Saturday:

Today: Sunny and hot, with a high near 97. Heat index values as high as 100. Light wind becoming west between 10 and 13 mph.

Tonight: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 72. West wind between 5 and 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Friday: A slight chance of showers between 8am and 2pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 88. North wind between 3 and 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Friday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 66. East wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Saturday: A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 76. East wind around 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Saturday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Cloudy, with a low around 65. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Sunday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 83. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Sunday Night: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 64. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 80.
