FAIR HAVEN: A WELL-TRAVELED HYDRANT

A Fair Haven fire hydrant wound up on River Road – around the corner and several hundred feet from its customary home on Denormandie Avenue, right – after it was struck and dragged by a boat trailer Thursday morning.

The driver pulled over and dislodged the hydrant, and then continued west on River Road, said borough police Sergeant Jesse Dykstra.

James G. Stokes III, 46, of Atco, New Jersey, was stopped in Red Bank by Fair Haven police and cited for careless driving, Dysktra said.

The accident did not trigger a geyser of water to flow out, he said.

“This not the first time that one’s been taken out,” Fire Chief Derek DeBree said of the hydrant. Vehicles “take that corner, and they collect the hydrant.” (Click to enlarge)
