Pappy Van Winkle is a small-batch bourbon that is next to impossible to get. Prices start in the hundreds of dollars per bottle, but even then, that’s only if you can find one to buy.
And so it goes that when PieHole got word that there were no less than four bottles of this rarer-than-rare bourbon available at the Little Silver Bottle Shop, we had to check it out.
Shop owner Bill Kenney tell us that he’s holding a blind auction for the single lot of four bottles (10, 12, 13 and 15-year bottles) of Pappy Van Winkle.
“We got lucky,” says Kenney. “It’s very difficult to get. It comes in once a year, and you’re just very lucky to get an allocation of it as a store.”
So prized is the bourbon that many suspect that the high-profile theft of more than 200 bottles from the distillery this fall was an inside job.
Kenney says the auction is the only fair way to sell the four his store received.
“We get a lot of calls for it all the time,” says Kenney. “There’s no fair way for us to choose who gets it, so the auction seemed like the most equitable way.”
