On a friend’s suggestion, PieHole stopped by the deli on the corner of Oceanport and Silverside avenues in Little Silver. A&G Italian Fine Foods opened just before Thanksgiving in the location vacated by Giovanni’s over a year ago.
The deli is a family-run business with four other locations in New Jersey. Charlie Calco, who runs the Little Silver location, tells PieHole that his family bought the building from Giovanni’s over 10 years ago.
“After the business changed hands a few times, we said let’s bring our store down there and see how we do,” says Calco.
As is true with a few other good delis around the Green, A&G makes its own mozzarella ($9.99 per pound) daily. PieHole was happy to see a nice selection of dry-cured charcuterie that the family also makes in-house for sale in their stores. They make a variety of homemade sausage, too.
On Calco’s suggestion, we had the A&G Special ($7.99) for lunch. It features sopresatta, capicola, prosciutto, fresh mozzarella topped with roasted peppers and sun-dried tomatoes and a balsamic vinaigrette.
The bread comes from Gianella’s Bakery in Paterson. The bakery was previously located in Brooklyn. “Their bread’s the best,” says Calco. “It hasn’t changed a bit since they’ve moved.”
