ST. GEORGE’S ART FAIR MOVES TO LABOR DAY

sunflower-4112748SUNFLOWER NEST by Avery Brighton was among the prize-winning works displayed at last year’s Canterbury Art Show…A Tapestry of the Arts. The three-day festival returns on Labor Day weekend to St. George’s by the River in Rumson.

Returning to St. George’s by the River Episcopal Church in Rumson for the third consecutive year, the annual Canterbury Art Show…a Tapestry of the Arts event moves to Labor Day weekend for the 2014 edition of the local exhibition and sale of juried and non-juried artwork.

Hundreds of attendees have enjoyed the Canterbury Art Show, at which more than 600 works by artists from all over New Jersey and beyond are displayed and sold. Event times for this year’s show are Friday, August 29 from 11am to 6 pm; Saturday, August 30 from 10 am to 6 pm, and Sunday, August 31 from 12pm to 4pm. A special Meet the Artists reception will be held Friday evening from 7 pm to 9 pm. All proceeds from the Art Show directly benefit St. George’s-by-the-River and its Outreach Grants to more than 30 local agencies serving the needy of Monmouth and Ocean counties, including Lunch Break, Family Promise, HABcore, 180 Turning Lives Around, and more.

“It’s our hope that the Canterbury Art Show becomes a beloved venue for local artists to show off their God-given gifts for the rest of us to enjoy,” said St. George’s-by-the-River Rector Ophelia Laughlin. “The building of St. George’s by-the-River is itself a masterpiece of art and 19th century architecture. We welcome our community to enjoy it!”

This year’s Jury will include such well-known local artists and gallery owners as Charles T. Peters III of CT Peters Appraisal Service in Red Bank, Erik Johansen of Brookdale Community College, and Carol Lynn Chetkin of Red Bank’s Chetkin Gallery.

Last year’s Best in Show winner was Cheryl Griesbach, for her oil The Joyful Wife.  The Award in Excellence was given to Avery Brighton for her photograph Sunflower Nest. Other winning artists were Joe Bergholm, Michael Scherfen, Ellen Martin, Lucy Kalian, Brigitte Wachs and Anna Wainright.

Tickets to the Canterbury Art Show…a Tapestry of the Arts can be purchased in advance on the event website www.canterburyartshow.com or at the door each day.  Daytime show tickets are $10 each. and are good for all days of the show. Tickets to the August 29 reception are $40 in advance and $50 at the door.  The reception includes wine, beer, hors d’oeuvres and dessert, and the purchase of a reception ticket provides the purchaser with free entry to the show every day.
