RUMSON: ART FOR HAITI EVENT AT CANVAS

canvas-david-thebaud-9635672For the second time in two years, Canvas Studio Art in Rumson will once again host an informal meet and greet with Haitian artist David Thebaud.

Scheduled for Monday afternoon, the event marks a return to the West River Road space for the co-founder of the ELT Art School in Haiti, who last appeared here in 2014 as part of a benefit event for victims of the devastating 2010 earthquake. (As detailed here on redbankgreen, the celebrated painter known as “Tebo” also paid a visit to Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School).

Now, the Caribbean island nation is again reeling from the effects of a natural disaster — Hurricane Matthew. And as Tebo explains, the Haitian people are now more than ever in desperate need of clean water, food and other necessities.

During Monday’s event, running rom 3 to 6 p.m., Canvas will exhibit and sell artwork created by Thebaud and his fellow members of the cooperative, in addition to bracelets made by ELT students. All proceeds from the sale will go to the Haitian Peoples Support Project and its effort to help fund the ELT school, which, in addition to teaching children artisanal trades, helps furnish food and clean water to its students and local families.

Purchases may be paid for by check only; donations to Haitian Peoples Support Project can be made online here. It’s also not too late to register for a class at Canvas, with more information on the studio’s programs available by calling (732) 383-7927 or emailing [email protected].
