Here’s the answer to last week’s “Where.”
Last week’s “where” was of a sculpture just outside Red Bank Marina on West Front Street, at the foot of Hubbard’s (Oh, ok, Sen. Joseph Kyrillos) Bridge of a swashbuckling mariner at the wheel of a ship. Appropriately for a guy who spends his afternoons staring westward into the sun, someone has slapped a pair of shades on him.
One respondent, Nick, had no idea where this guy was, but suggested a lineage with the Muffler Men statues that dotted roadside America throughout the second half of the 1900’s, like the carpet carrying giant under the Pulaski Skyway in Jersey City or the lumberjack holding the golf club at Barnacle Bill’s mini golf in Ortley Beach.
That’s a cool reference, but it’s not the same thing. We would only be so lucky to have a muffler man here in Red Bank. For now though, most seem to agree this pirate dude is an awesome “Welcome to Red Bank” ambassador to have at the entrance to town.
