Former players with Red Bank FC, the youth soccer club founded by Red Bank coach John LeFever, reunited for a Thanksgiving weekend friendly at Count Basie Fields this past weekend.
In March, LeFever (far left in the photo) was named “Volunteer of the Year” by NJ Youth Soccer, an award created to honor an individual “who not only serves as an excellent soccer role model but also exhibits a willingness to advance the sport via their conduct and personal character.”
LeFever has been a coach to hundreds of children in Red Bank for over 20 years. He and his wife have lived on Spring Street for a decade longer than that.
Legend has it that even when the stadium at Count Basie Field is totally empty on cold winter nights, the sound of his voice screaming instructions from the sideline can still be heard echoing into the night. But that might just be the voices inside the head of a grateful reporter whose kid LeFever coached for years.
At any rate, the award in March was great, but former players coming back for a reunion of their youth soccer team might be even better testament to his impact.
