UPDATE: This story is being updated to add information provided by the Red Bank Police Department.

Police credited a group of good Samaritans with lifting an SUV off a pedestrian who had been struck and trapped beneath the vehicle on Monmouth Street Wednesday.

The female victim appeared conscious as she was loaded onto an ambulance bound for Jersey Shore Medical Center after the incident in front of Teak Restaurant and Bar at 64 Monmouth Street shortly after 2 pm. Police said she sustained fractured ribs, a fractured pelvis and a collapsed lung and was in stable condition Wednesday evening.

Police were questioning the driver, who was crying and appeared visibly distraught, in the Teak parking lot. As part of their investigation, they were also reviewing video footage from nearby security cameras.

Police credited the quick action of a group of roughly a dozen people who helped them lift the vehicle off the woman who was trapped underneath it after being struck.

At least several of them were working inside Teak, according to Rich Parker, one of the restaurant employees. He said workers looked out the window to see people standing around the Toyota Rav 4 and quickly rounded up as many people as they could to help out.

“We grabbed everybody,” Parker said. “Kitchen staff, front of the house staff, about fifteen of us just lifted it up.”

The incident appears to be the second time a driver has struck a pedestrian this year. Last year the borough saw 15 crashes involving pedestrians up from ten the previous year and amid a tragic 30 percent statewide increase in pedestrian fatalities statewide.

Update: Red Bank Police Chief Mike Frazee released the following information on the incident in an email Wednesday evening:

The victim was identified as Nancy Hermann of Oceanport, N.J.  Hermann was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Toyota Rav4 was identified as Emilia Vasquez De Menjivar of Tinton Falls.

This incident is still under investigation, but it appears that the victim was walking east along the sidewalk, crossing over the driveway apron of 64 Monmouth Street when the driver of the Toyota Rav4 turned her vehicle into the driveway and struck the pedestrian as she was walking.

The incident is being investigated by Sgt. Heather Kovar who is the supervisor of the department’s Traffic Safety Unit.
