Here’s the answer to last week’s “Where.”
Last week’s photo was a close-up of the gold stars and ribbon pattern on the base of the iconic Reussille’s clock (or as Where respondent called it, the “Morgan Clock”) in front of 36 Broad Street (pictured here with the likely inspiration for all the “no-wheels” signs that have cropped up on Broadwalk over the past week.)
The clock was erected in 1902, when jeweler Leon de la Reussille moved his jewelry shop to the building. In 1930, the business became Ballew Jewelers, which continued operation into 2011, though the clock retained the Reussille name.
The Morgan family bought the building, along with the clock, in 2011. The storefront is now home to Chocolate Works.
Whereas the name Reussille was previously beneath both clock faces, one side now bears the name ‘Morgan,’ in honor of building owner Michael Morgan Jr.’s late father, Michael Morgan Sr. In 2022 the clock was knocked down by a truck and repaired and restored.
redbankgreen knew the clock just had to be in the logo we designed last year for our “Throwbacks” feature in which we unearth great old stories from local newspaper archives.
