Here’s the answer to last week’s “Where.”
Last week’s photo was a close-up of an inlaid letter G on the driveway apron from Canal Street to the parking lot for Garmany which describes itself as “New Jersey’s finest designer clothing store.” It continues, “a visit to Garmany is a must for the man or woman who desires the utmost in style, sophistication, and personal attention.’ Which pretty much explains why the frumpy newsman typing this has never set foot inside the place.
Garmany moved from another location on Broad Street into the former Steinbach and Bon-Ton department store building at 117 Broad in 2005.
The story of Garmany is a remarkable one (and a great American tale to think about on this Fourth of July) from the immigrant roots of its late founder Larry Garmany to the store’s role in bringing Red Bank’s downtown back from its moribund “Dead Bank Days.”
Our 2015 obituary and 2007 profile of Larry Garmany, both written by publisher emeritus John T. Ward, are both worth reading if you’re not familiar with the history.
