VIRGINIA’S NEW GOVERNOR? SHE WAS BORN IN RED BANK

EDITOR’S NOTE: Changes to the original version of this story have been made in response to readers contacting redbankgreen saying Spanberger was born in Red Bank but the family lived in Aberdeen. While this info conflicts with online biographies of Spanberger, we have updated the story for clarity.

By BRIAN DONOHUE

Hey, any longtime Red Bankers recognize this face?

She was thirteen when her family moved to Virginia so her police officer father could pursue a federal law enforcement job down there. A few decades later? Well, this kid from Monmouth County is running the whole state.

Democrat Abigail Spanberger was declared the winner in the Virginia race for governor Tuesday by the Associated Press less than an hour after the polls closed Tuesday.

The former Congresswoman and CIA intelligence officer will become the state’s first female governor. She defeated Republican Winsome Earle-Sears by 55 to 44 percent, according to preliminary tallies published by the AP.

According to her bio, Spanberger was born Abigail Anne Davis in Red Bank, New Jersey, on August 7, 1979. Her father was a police officer and her mother was a nurse. One reader who knew her parents said the family lived in nearby Aberdeen, not Red Bank.

When she was 13, she moved with her parents, Martin and Eileen Davis, to Short Pump, Virginia, outside Richmond, after her father moved from policing to federal law enforcement for the United States Postal Inspection Service.

Thirteen is a darn tough age to move.

But it looks like it worked out all right for the Davis family from Monmouth County.
