Here’s the answer to last week’s “Where.”
Last week’s photo was a close up of the mural on the back of Detour Gallery, 24 Clay Street in Red Bank. We usually try to get the story behind our ‘Where’ photos so we rang the doorbell looking for some answers. Owner Ken Schwartz came to the door, and we wound up with a great visit, a spontaneous full tour of the joint, a long, wonderful chat – and no answers.
Schwartz said he had no idea who painted the mural or who it in in the picture.
“I wish I could help you with that,” Schwartz told the Wheremaster. He added moments later, “I have a lot less info about a lot of things than people think I have.”
Inside, Detour is an absolute feast for the eyes, with his collection of thousands of works of art of all kinds neatly displayed throughout.
But Schwartz is retired, and Detour stopped holding regular openings or exhibits a few years ago, But he said it remains an active gallery.
The 10,000 square foot former warehouse is also Schwartz’s home. And these days, if Red Bankers want to take a look inside (we highly recommend it) just ring the doorbell.
Despite the Detour mural being in a highly visible location just off Broad Street, only a few people even sent in guesses this week – one of them off by blocks (Sorry, Chris. There’s always next week.)
