PHOTOS/VIDEO: A GLORIOUS WEEKEND ON THE FROZEN NAVESINK

Ice hockey under a full moon. Bicycle riders pedaling where fish typically swim. Ice skaters, parents pulling kids on sleds and masts being hoisted on 100 year-old ice boats.

A thick plate of ice on the Navesink River became a glorious winter playground over the weekend, drawing hundreds, if not thousands of onlookers, hobbyists, strollers and folks seeking a cure to cabin fever caused by deep deep freeze.

redbankgreen was out there, of course. As were photographers and social media drone pilots. None of the visuals will quite measure up to in-person aweseomness of it all. But here we have a curated selection of visuals from our own cameras as well as images posted to social media.

As for that ice? Well, it appears it’s not going anywhere soon. Members of the North Shrewsbury Ice Boat and Yacht Club were raising the masts Sunday on larger Class-A boats, which will prove even more of a delight to watch.

And with forecast temperatures barely nudging the freezing mark only one day in the next week, they’re already making plans for races next weekend.

How this for a fantasy football league losers’ prize? These two poor suckers had to set up a lemonade stand on the ice on a day with zero degree wind chill. There was no charge for the lemonade and they couldn’t even give it away.

Here come the big boats: Members of the North Shrewsbury Ice Boat & Yacht club raise the mast on one of the larger Class A boats. The larger boats require thicker ice.
