Here’s the answer to last week’s “Where.”
Last week’s photo was of the roof line of buildings at the intersection of Bridge and West Front. On the left is the Red Bank Antique Center at 226 West Front Street and on the right is the more modern West Side Lofts Building at 1 Bridge Avenue.
It sent out down a rabbit hole in which we found this 2013 redbankgreen story that touched upon the tenuous relationship between the then-under-construction lofts building and the antiques market.
The loft building construction required the demolition of the building that housed the Monmouth Antiques Shoppe, which reduced the size of Red Bank’s beloved antiques district by one-third. And that had the owner of Red Bank Antique Center wondering if they’d be able to hold on amid the changes. Thirteen years later they’re still at it. Every visit we make there is a reminder to go more often and support this true gem of Red Bank.
This one may have been, as “Where” regular Yvonne MacDonald put it, “way too easy.” As Chuck Stern put it, “if you don’t recognize that red siding and those green shutters on the Antique Center you’ve never been to Red Bank!” Mary Ellen Banfield added a history note to her correct guess: “The majority of those warehouses were part of the Eisner textile factory” which was convered into the Galleria. Several people took the opportunity to comment on how ugly they thought the West Side Lofts building is. At least in this photo it looks like some half-hearted attempt may have been made by architects to match the building across the street. Or maybe it’s just an accident.
