Here’s the answer to last week’s “Where.”

Last week’s ‘Where’ was a close-up of the top floor of one of Red Bank’s greatest institutions: Gus’s Barber Shop at 243 Shrewsbury Avenue. Is there a still-operating place more embedded in the memories of Red Bankers past and present? You’d be hard pressed to find it.

The Wheremaster has not had a need for haircuts in quite a few years, but in a previous life as one of those ultra-rare, follically challenged TV newsmen, he did pay a visit to Gus for a shave and a chance to tell the wonderful story of one of the longest-running businesses in town. Gus Carter, well into his 80’s, has been cutting hair in Red Bank for nearly a half-century.

Ellie Inbritsen wrote of Gus’s and shared some of her own story:

“This is one of the Black-owned businesses on Shrewsbury Avenue on the Westside of Red Bank.  My mother, Alice Ancrum, owned Alice’s Beauty Shop at 261 Shrewsbury Avenue from the 50s to the 90s.   The building is now a very bright green Mexican Store/Club.

The Westside of Red Bank had businesses that reflected the community’s diversity, representing Black, Italian, and Jewish store owners.  Someone should write a story about the working-class community of Westside Red Bank.”

A couple of folks guessed this might be Sal’s Tavern, a business which is long gone but operated in a similar looking buidling just down Shrewsbury Avenue (It’s now the pretty wonderful B2 Bistro.) Some folks just guessed “Shrewsbury Avenue.” Correct, but not really.
