Here’s the answer to last week’s “Where.”
Last week’s photo was of the rectangular ground-floor windows on the Oakland Street side of the building on the northwest corner of Bridge Avenue and Oakland Street. The addresses for entrances are variously 83 Bridge Avenue and 118 Oakland Street.
As neighborhood history advocate Anthony Setaro told us a few months ago, the building features prominently in a famous photo of President William Howard Taft speaking at the train station in 1912. So, yeah, it’s an old one.
This block is being dramatically transformed by the construction of 20-unit condominium building being built, well, all around this old Red Bank gem. As Where regular Peter Cavalier wrote, “it survived the wrecking ball” as the new development rises around it. Oh and Cavalier also tells us Theodore Roosevelt also addressed locals during the 1912 campaign with the building as the backdrop.
One person incorrectly guessed it was a ticket booth at the historic train station across the street. Another regular guessed the building correctly but said it was President William McKinley who spoke there. Maybe he did too?
Today it’s home to a dentist and insurance agent’s office. It’s had many different uses over the years, including, according to this 1980 Red Bank Register ad sent in by Chuck Stern, a coffee shop and a possibly mouse-infested cheese shop/bistro.
