RED BANK: CHILD STRUCK BY VEHICLE

just_in1-220x90-7294544A 12-year-old Red Bank Charter School student was struck by a vehicle on Monmouth Street Monday afternoon.

Police Chief Darren McConnell told redbankgreen that the girl, a female, was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune with injuries that were not life-threatening.

According to preliminary information, the girl was crossing Monmouth Street in the crosswalk from south to north, at the intersection of Pearl Street, when she was struck by a vehicle westbound on Monmouth at about 4:14 p.m., McConnell said.

He said it appeared the child entered the street behind an eastbound school bus that was stopped in traffic, and not discharging or boarding students at the time. Witnesses said the girl emerged into the westbound lane before the driver of the vehicle that struck her could stop, McConnell said.

“The child may have run into” the path of the car, he said.

McConnell said the girl is believed to have suffered contusions and leg injuries, and was expected to spend the night at the hospital for observation.

The driver was identified as Judith Cunningham, 58, of Neptune. No summonses had been issued at 6:30 p.m., and the investigation was continuing, McConnell said.

Other charter school students were on the scene when police arrived, but it wasn’t immediately known if they were with the girl when the accident occurred, McConnell said.
