If there’s a sign of the 180-degree turn our society has taken on attitudes towards marijuana, this may be it:

An annual borough-sponsored health campaign that has included things like bike rides, blood pressure screenings and vaccinations has added a new element to its educational offerings this year: a lecture at the Red Bank Senior Center on the “wonder weed” cannabis sativa.

The Mayor’s Wellness Campaign and local cannabis retailer Canopy Crossroad announced the lecture by Rutgers Plant Expert Richard J. Buckley earlier this week. Advertising posted to social media by the borough and Canopy Crossroad described the 21-and-over event as “an insightful talk” that aims to foster a well-informed discussion on wellness and responsible cannabis use.”

“We are excited to offer this educational opportunity to our community,” Red Bank Mayor Billy Portman said in a press release issued by the Borough.  “I’m sure people have lots of questions and preconceived notions about cannabis. Hopefully, we will be
able to provide some answers.”

The press release continues:

A collaboration between the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign and Canopy Crossroad, a small business founded by Red Bank-locals, this event supports the campaign’s focus on community education and Canopy Crossroad’s mission to make reliable cannabis knowledge available in a supportive learning environment.

“We’re honored to participate in the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign,” said Andy Zeitlin, Co-Founder and COO of Canopy Crossroad. “Our hope is to bring clarity to the science of cannabis and its potential wellness benefits.”

It will also no doubt provide a mind blowing moment for those of us who remember the anti-marijuana government publicity campaigns of the “reefer madness” era.

To be sure, the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign is also presenting this week a slew of more traditional wellness offerings. On Saturday, the campaign will sponsor the second annual Community Day at the Red Bank Middle School. The day will include:

• Turkey & Food Giveaway
• FREE COVID and Flu Vaccinations
• FREE Blood Pressure Screenings
• Winter Clothing Drive
• Mental Health Services, Financial Assistance, Housing Information, Educational Support
• Snacks, Refreshments, Entertainment, and More!

The event runs from 9 am to 2 pm inside the Middle School gymnasium.
