Here’s the answer to last week’s “Where.”
Last week’s was a tight shot of the roofline of 21 West Front Street, taken from Boat Club Way, with the back of the Newport Capital Building on Broad Street looming in the background. The photo was taken by redbankgreen founder and publisher emeritus John Ward, and is a classic example of Wardian roofline architecture-centric WHIST photography.
“Where” regular Cecelia Freda gave this detailed description: “This week’s photo is all about the angle. It appears to have been taken from Boat Club Court. The facade in the foreground is the building at 21 W. Front Street which houses J.J. Delicacies. The building viewed behind is actually the back of the Newport Capital Group Building located on Broad Street at (I think) number 12 Broad. The stars on the building is what gave it away.”
A 1938 directory lists 22 West Front as the home to Schneider’s Market, operated by Charles D Schneider, selling groceries, meats, fruits and produce. We weren’t able to find much else about the building. I’ll buy a bubble tea at J.J. Delicacies for anyone who can find us more history.
