Here’s the answer to last week’s “Where.”
Last week’s photo was a close up of the words of ancient Roman poet Horace engraved in the sidewalk in front of 10 Mechanic Street.
At some point when the cement was wet, it seems, some poetic vandal crouched down and wrote “Carpe Diem” in the wet cement.
Who did this? What kind of character has both the audacity and rule-breaking tendencies to commit a misdemeanor all in the name of imparting a bit of 2,000-year-old inspiration to generations of passersby?
I wonder every time I walk by and couldn’t resist finally featuring this stretch of concrete in “Where.”
Most of those who guessed used the contextual clues of the pink stucco and the curved design of the base of the building facade to figure it out.
Some commenters rightly remarked that a photo of the front of this pink stucco building was featured in “Where” just 12 months ago in September, 2025.
Generally, we try to spread the locations out a bit better, but we felt we just had to seize the day and let this one rip. Several people said they recognized the photo because they’ve walked by the spot so many times coming and going from Cardner’s Barber Shop, which sits just west of the location on the same side of the street.
