Here’s the answer to last week’s “Where.”
Last week’s photo was taken inside of Camera Culture camera shop at 24 Monmouth Street through the lense of the shop’s early 20th century studio camera.
When viewed from behind the camera, the image in the large glass view finder appears upside down. The camera points out the window at the building across the street, 19 Monmouth Street, former home of Surf’s Up Coffee and Candles and future home of Julia’s Coffee Co.
Owner Jeff Gross ran across the street to pose in the doorway so we could take an upside-down photo of him through the camera, something he says many customers like to do.
The camera still has its original wood frame and base. When Gross and Amanda Snell opened Camera Culture in Red Bank, they decided to bring the camera to display in the window along with a collection of other antique and vintage cameras.
A plate on the front of the camera describes it as a No. 9A Century Studio Camera made by Eastman Kodak Co.
This was a fun ‘Where’ photo.
Boris Kofman, who deduced the location based on the coffee shop in the image and the big camera in the window said it “kept me entertained for a while.” Mission accomplished!
“Where” regular Chuck Stern did some research and found that the glass panel in the back of these old cameras is called the “ground glass.”
One person guessed the photo was of the Dublin House.
