PEDESTRIAN STRUCK ON BROAD STREET

just_in1A Highlands woman was hit by a car as she crossed Broad Street in Red Bank this afternoon, police said.

The 66-year-old woman, who police did not identify pending notification of her family, was taken to Riverview Medical Center with a leg injury, said police Captain Darren McConnell, who heads the department’s traffic and safety unit. Her injuries are not life-threatening, he said.

The accident occurred at 2:28p, McConnell said, as the woman was crossing from west to east on Broad Street, near Mechanic Street. The driver, Hilary Cuva, of Wayne, was making a left onto Broad Street from Mechanic in her 2005 Infiniti when she “apparently didn’t see the pedestrian,” and hit her, McConnell said.

“It looked as if the pedestrian was in or near the crosswalk,” he said.

The accident comes just three weeks after borough police conducted a decoy operation to nab and subsequently alert drivers violating the state’s new pedestrian safety law, which requires drivers to fully stop for people in the crosswalk. Violators face two points on their license, 15 days of community service and a $200 fine for the offense.

Cuva, 22, hadn’t been issued any summons as of this posting, McConnell said. Patrolman Beau Broadley is investigating the accident.

Traffic was tied up on Broad for about 20 minutes, McConnell said, while first responders, including some from Little Silver, tended to the scene.

Tuesday was a busy day for emergency crews in Red Bank, with alarms and calls coming in throughout the day, McConnell said.

“It was crazy busy, but nothing too serious,” McConnell said.
