Red Bank School officials today drew lots to fill next school year’s expanded pre-K program for three-year olds.
The lottery was needed because 63 applications for the program were received but only 60 slots are available, says Superintendent Laura Morana.
The district is expanding its offerings for three-year-olds to accommodate 60 students in September, up from the present 15. That will boost the enrollment of eligible borough three-and-four-year-olds to 71 percent, from the present 51 percent, Morana says.
The district is under a mandate to offer pre-K schooling to 90 percent of children by 2013. Morana says she is confident that the district will be at 100 percent ahead of that deadline.
Letters notifying parents if their child was selected or wait-listed today are expected to be in the mail by Monday, Morana says. Those who just can’t wait may email her at [email protected] to find out if their child was chosen, she says.
The lottery also assigned an order of preference to 19 children whose applications weren’t complete, in the event that more than three children selected move out of town or otherwise do not end up enrolling.
