Fair Haven police are investigating two incidents in which juveniles are suspected of taking wallets from parked cars on two separate streets.
Police learned of the thefts Tuesday after they received a report of two young black men looking into a car on Gentry Drive, Detective Jesse Dykstra told redbankgreen. The juveniles fled the scene after being confronted by the vehicle’s owner.
“Once we got that one call, we knew we were in for something,” he said.
Police then received reports from residents elsewhere that their wallets were taken from their vehicles. One was taken from Park Avenue, and the other from nearby Park Place. The thefts occurred between 11:45a and 4p.
Gift cards, credit cards and an unknown amount of cash were taken from the wallets, which were later recovered on nearby properties, Dykstra said.
“They were grabbing them, shuffling through them and then dropping,” he said.
In both instances the cars were unlocked, Dykstra said. He urges all residents to make sure they lock their car doors, especially if their wallets are inside.
“You can’t stress that enough,” he said.
