Is women’s casual-wear and home-décor retailer Anthropologie coming to The Grove?
A jobs posting last week on craigslist indicates the chain is hiring store managers, department managers and other anthropologistes with retail experience for a location given as “Red Bank.” And the chain’s own website lists six job openings in “Red Bank.”
A reliable source tells us, however, that the location for the coming store is actually The Grove at Shrewsbury. Folks at Metrovation, The GroveÂ’s managing partner, say thereÂ’s nothing they can discuss at this point.
For the uninitiated, Anthropologie hawks “such remarkable pieces as one of a kind hand-beaded and dip-dyed vintage cashmere cardigans; sandals hand-built from the wooden heels up with vintage tie material and embroidered buttons; and the first quilt ever printed with one hundred hand-cut blocks by artisans in Jaipur, India.”
Well, no wonder they call it Anthropologie. It’s so much more on-the-nose than “J. Peterman.”
The craigslist item says Anthropologie “will be hiring sales candidates at a later date.” Jobseekers need to apply through the company’s website.
The retailer is a subsidiary of Urban Outfitters Inc., based in Philly, and has 60+ stores, including locations in Princeton, Short Hills, Edgewater and Woodcliff Lake.
If the companyÂ’s Rockefeller Center store is an indicator, it seems that Anthropologie is ratcheting up its consumption-as-world-culture-symposium approach to a new level. A decorative arts gallery recently debuted at the store, with exhibits slated to change every six to eight weeks. HereÂ’s what the Times had to say last month about the opening exhibit:
‘Lost & Found,’ features traditional museum domes reinterpreted by Serge Rosenzweig, a French artist ($1,800 each). Inside the domes are floral arrangements made of found objects and materials like 18th-century paper and miniature cake molds.
