Friday, January 11

LINCROFT: The Robert J. Collins Arena at Brookdale Community College hosts the 23rd annual expo of home improvement contractors, vendors and manufacturers, a three-day event showcasing everything from spas to sponges, and every helpful/healthful thing between. Hours are from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday, 11 to 8 Saturday, 11 to 5 Sunday. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 kids 12-17, under 12 are free. Newman Springs Road/Route 520.

RUMSON: Former Rutgers football player Eric LeGrand, paralyzed in a game, talks about his effort to recover, as described in his book, ‘Believe: My Faith and the Tackle That Changed My Life’ (available at River Road Books). 7 to 10 p.m. 74 Ridge Hill Road.

RED BANK: A veteran of “Sesame Street” and a Tony Award winner for “Bring On ‘Da Noise, Bring On ‘Da Funk,” the modern master of tap, Savion Glover, pays homage to the greatest tap dancers of the past century in a touring show, SoLe Sanctuary: Hoofer’s Meditation on the Art of Tap, that ‘quotes their steps, intones their names, and praises their memory with a living shrine of their oversized photos on stage.’ Tickets for the Count Basie Theatre show are $29.50, $39.50, and $55.99. Show starts at 8 p.m. Monmouth Street.

Saturday, January 12

MIDDLETOWN: The Middletown Main Library hosts an opening reception for a display of natural landscape images by John Basile at 2 p.m., with the artist present and the exhibit continuing during regular library hours through January 25. Admission is free. 55 New Monmouth Road.

RED BANK: Michael Thomas, Assistant Dean of Humanities at Monmouth University, is featured (with poet and comedian Eric Farwell, and the famous River Read open mic) in the monthly free poetry slam event in Red Bank, relocated to Saturday afternoons at the Red Bank Public Library from 2:30pm. 84 West Front Street.

SHREWSBURY: The Eastern Branch of the Monmouth County Library in Shrewsbury hosts fitness authority Joe Stein in a discussion on ‘how making small and attainable changes can help you achieve your fitness resolutions’ at 3 p.m. 1001 Route 35 North.

RED BANK: Emmy winning writer, standup comic and ‘Senior British Correspondent’ John Oliver of “The Daily Show with John Stewart” takes to the Count Basie Theatre stage at 8 p.m. for a series of keen observations on politics and the popular culture. Tickets are $19.50, $22.50, and $32.50. 99 Monmouth Street.

RED BANK: Red Bank’s Two River Theater is the setting for the annual comedy night production at 8 p.m. to benefit the Monmouth County based nonprofit 180 Turning Lives Around, with Paul Virsi, Marina Franklin, Nore Davis and Jon Fisch bringing the laughs — plus traveling art exhibit and cash bar also featured. Tickets are $40. 21 Bridge Avenue.

Sunday, January 13

LITTLE SILVER: Sickles Market in Little Silver invites participants to visit their tropical greenhouse, and learn how to create and care for their very own 7′ bubble terrarium from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Space is limited and advance registration plus payment required.
