A Rumson man was arrested following a melee during a baseball game at Red Bank Regional High in Little Silver Saturday afternoon, police said.
Patrick Maisto, 49, is alleged to have assaulted a player during a bench-clearing brawl, Little Silver police Lieutenant Bob Frank tells redbankgreen.
Borough police were summoned to the scene on a report of a melee. Frank said. He did not immediately know which of three scheduled games – freshman, junior varsity or varsity – the fight occurred during.
The incident is under investigation, Frank said.
Scott Stump of sports site AllShoreMedia says on Twitter that “the Battle of Ridge Road turned into UFC 159 this morning when the RFH-RBR game was called in the 6th tied 1-1 after a bench-clearing brawl.”
Update from AllShoreMedia:
“With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning in a game between Red Bank and visiting Rumson-Fair Haven on Saturday morning, the game was discontinued following the ejection of every player from both teams as a result of a bench-clearing brawl.
Red Bank’s Ross Gisondi got into a collision with Rumson catcher Joey Spernal at home plate while running home from third after a Red Bank batter missed the pitch on an attempted squeeze bunt, and a fight erupted. Every player from each team involved in the brawl was ejected, according to Rumson coach Gary Costello, resulting in the game being called by the umpires. Red Bank was given a 1-0 victory because the score reverts to the last full inning, which was the fifth, when the Bucs had a 1-0 lead.”
