CONGRESSWOMAN VISITS REFORM TEMPLE

Press release from Monmouth Reform Templedebbiewassermanschultz-9496127

Monmouth Reform Temple (MRT), 332 Hance Avenue in Tinton Falls, will welcome the distinguished Congresswoman and Democratic National Committee Chairperson, Debbie Wasserman Schultz on Sunday, December 8 at 10 am.  The public is invited to meet this iconic lady who will discuss “Being a Jewish Woman on the American Political Stage.”

She also recently published her new book, For the Next Generation: A Wake-up Call to Solving Our Nation’s Problems and she will be available to sign books after her presentation. The public is invited and there is no charge for the event.

Originally from the New York City area, Deborah Wasserman went to college in Florida and began working in politics as a legislative aide. At the age of 26, she ran for the Florida legislature and became the youngest female legislator in the state’s history. Debbie Wasserman Schultz became Florida’s first Jewish Congresswoman when she was elected to the 23rd district in 2004 and won re-election four times.

In her book, she discusses America’s major problems that the super-partisan political climate is stymied to address including immigration and gun safety, sustainable energy sources, repairing, America’s crumbling infrastructure and safeguarding the safety net. She is the mother of three busy teenagers and juggles her personal and professional responsibilities with the support of her husband and family.  Most remarkable within the context of her extraordinary schedule, the Congresswoman underwent eight surgeries related to breast cancer in 2008, keeping this information private until 2009.

She writes on a blog site on the Huffington Post, “I chose the title For the Next Generation because I recognized that if we punt every major challenge, from economic policy to education to immigration, then it will wind up hurting our kids the most.” She adds, “I have a strong suspicion that if more moms were in Congress, there would be a more cooperative environment and more of an emphasis on getting to yes instead of digging in.”

MRT Rabbi Bob Ourach states of his esteemed guest, “Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz has always conducted her public service in the truest sense of the Jewish principal of Tikkun Olam—Repairing the World.”
