On Saturday, October 11, the League of Women Voters of New Jersey will hold a public-welcome educational forum entitled “Engaged and Empowered: A New Generation of Leaders.”
Hosted on the Lincroft campus of Brookdale Community College, the program of workshops and presentations will discuss and explore political engagement and activism among Millennials — the generation commonly defined as those born in the early 1980s into the early 2000s.
Leading the discussion will be keynote speaker, filmmaker, storyteller, and Millennial writer David Burstein. The author of Fast Future: How the Millennial Generation is Shaping Our World will explain how the largest generation in history is changing business, technology, culture, and politics. Burstein is also the founder of Generation 18, a nonpartisan young voter engagement organization.
Following the keynote address, a panel of young activists working in different policy fields will discuss their efforts to engage their peers. Panelists will include Stacey Faella, Chair, League of Women Voters of New Jersey Young People’s Network; Nicole Scott-Harris, Newark Organizer, NJ Environmental Justice Alliance; Casey Olesko, Vice President of Public and Community Affairs, Planned Parenthood Association of the Mercer Area; and Giancarlo Tello, New Jersey DREAMer.
Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in an afternoon workshop on a range of topics including hands-on training in best practices for youth engagement, and discussions about the disparaging representation of women and girls in mainstream media, climate change, voting rights, and issues in immigration.
“The League of Women Voters of New Jersey is excited to share the opportunity to learn more about this vibrant and energetic generation,” said Kerry Butch, Executive Director. “This is an important step to ensure a steady rise in voter turnout, nurture our future leaders, and bridge the gap between generations for the good of our communities.”
Registration fee for the October 11 event is $35, which includes all sessions, materials and lunch. The registration fee for students is $15, and scholarships are available for those students that need assistance covering the fee.
