Press release from Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School

Redefining “The Sandwich Generation,”a group of charity-minded students at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School have cooked up a tasty fundraiser to benefit local food banks.

Now through November 19, the Character Education Club at RFH is running their new “Take a Bite out of Hunger” initiative, during which local merchants and students will be selling student-designed sandwich creations and donating a portion of the proceeds to “Students Change Hunger 2014!”

The “Students Change Hunger 2014!” campaign, running from September 15 through November 21, challenges all New Jersey Schools to collect as much food as possible for their local food bank. The proceeds from “Take a Bite out of Hunger” will benefit the Food Banks of Monmouth and Ocean counties.

In addition to lots of good eating, healthy competition will be taking place on a few fronts. Locals Foodery on East River Road in Rumson and Sickles Market on Harrison Avenue in Little Silver are each hoping to sell the higher number of sandwiches and be declared the champ. At RFH, it will be freshmen and sophomores squaring off against juniors and seniors in the October sandwich selling initiative.

David Ciambrone of Locals Foodery and Bob Sickles of Sickles Market will each be offering delicious RFH-themed fare priced at $8.25, including “The Beasty Bulldog” (roast beef, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato and horseradish mayonnaise) and “The Dawg Pound (grilled chicken breast with pesto, prosciutto, provolone cheese, and roasted peppers). “Buy One, Get One” specials on the Beasty Bulldog and the Dawg Pound will be offered at Sickles Market on October 22, and at Locals Foodery on October 29.

If the sandwiches sound delectable, you have student members of the Character Education Club to thank. Sophomore Taylor Glassman, junior Tommy Johnston, and senior Tara Sulak designed the sandwiches to appeal to a wide range of local residents.

“Take a Bite out of Hunger” is being held in support in of the RFH Key Club, which collects food for “Students Change Hunger” each year. More than 2,000 pounds of food was collected at RFH last year during the “Students Change Hunger” campaign.

The RFH Key Club will once again be requesting donations of nonperishable food items from October 1 through November 21. In keeping with tradition, the school’s homerooms will compete against one another to collect the largest number of items and win a complimentary breakfast from the Key Club.

Last year’s winning homeroom was Key Club Advisor Jonathan Pennetti’s, with over 650 items collected. Kate Borsuk’s homeroom was the second place winner, and Stefania Flecca’s homeroom came in third.

In addition to the sandwich sale and food item collection, a Yoga Event will be held at RFH on the morning of November 15. All students are invited to bring a yoga mat as well as a nonperishable food item in order to participate.
