Red Bank officials say they’re now about a month away from tearing down the West Sunset Avenue incinerator stack that has stood as a reminder of the town’s garbage-burning past for several decades.
The town council last night approved a $195,342 contract under which a demolition firm, Nacirema Environmental Services, will remove the stack and the incinerator building at its base.
The Bayonne company won the contact after a sealed-bid process, officials said.
Passage of a resolution approving the deal was cause for cheer among members of the governing body at their bimonthly meeting.
“I’m supposed to bring the champagne” to the demolition, said Mayor Pasquale Menna.
Officials have previously said the stack would be taken down piecemeal, rather than by explosives. No firm date for the work has been set, but they expect it to start in late September, they said.
According to an article in the current edition of the Two River Times, the state Department of Environmental Protection is expected to approve $250,000 in grant money to be used toward the demo job and another $226,600 for environmental testing at the site.
The elimination of the incinerator and stack would mark the first tangible progress toward reclamation of the surrounding 8.5-acre, riverfront dump site. Borough officials have general plans for the creation of a park at the site and are at work trying to nail down grant money to pay for it.
