RED BANK: SIMS CONVICTION OVERTURNED

hot topicAnthony Sims, who was found guilty in the 2014 shooting of a man seated in a car parked in Red Bank, may get a new trial following an appellate court decision issued Monday.

Sims, 32 years old, was wrongly convicted in part based on statements he gave to detectives without having been told why he was under arrest, the three-judge panel found.

Additionally, because the victim of the Willow Street shooting did not testify at trial, but his statements to police were used, Sims was denied his constitutional right to confront his accuser, the court found.

RFH TOPS RBR AS BARRY LEADS

Rumson-Fair Haven’s Brendan Barry scored 27 points as the Bulldogs used strong defense in the 4th quarter to hold off Ridge Road rival Red Bank Regional in Rumson Saturday. Matt Reardon had 17 for the Bucs and Teddy Sourlis 12 for the Bulldogs, who have now won 12 straight games.  Shore Sports Zone has those highlights and more here.

RFH WINS AS BARRY SETS NEW BAR

Rumson-Fair Haven’s Brendan Barry scored 23 points, including a three-pointer at the first-half buzzer, to make him the Bulldogs’ all-time leading scorer in a 53-48 home victory over Manasquan.

With the milestone, Barry surged past Palvin Williams, a 1973 Rumson graduate who flew in from the Dominican Republic to witness the shattering of a record that stood for 43 years.

RFH CRUISES ON BARRY’S 29

Rumson-Fair Haven’s Brendan Barry delivered 29 points to grab MVP honors for the second straight year as the Bulldogs handed Gill-St. Bernard its first loss of the season, 66-49, in the Hoop Group Boardwalk Showcase in Long Branch Saturday.  Collin McDevitt nailed three straight three pointers in the third quarter to spark a double digit lead. RFH is now 5-1 since Barry has returned from wrist surgery in early December.

RBR WINS, BOTH RFH TEAMS LOSE OPENERS

High school basketball returned to the Greater Red Bank Green Friday night with Red Bank Regional grabbing a win in its season-opener on the road in Wall Township.

Meanwhile, over in Rumson, the Rumson-Fair Haven Lady Bulldogs dropped one to Manasquan, and their male counterparts lost to the Manasaquan boys on the road as R-FH scoring star Brendan Barry sat out the game with an injury.

GIRLS’ SOCCER: CASEYS ADVANCE ON 1-0 WIN

Jackie Robinson was a brick wall in goal and Sophie Demurjian scored in the 60th minute to give Red Bank Catholic’s girls’ soccer team a 1-0 win against Saint John Vianney Thursday. Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights.

The Caseys now advance in the Non-Public South “A” girls soccer state tournament.

BOYS’ SOCCER: R-FH ADVANCES

Top-seeded Rumson-Fair Haven beat Raritan 4-0 to advance to the second round in the boys state Central Jersey Group 2 tournament in Rumson Tuesday evening.

The scoring included a must-see header by Jeremy Nives, and Shore Sports Zone caught it in gorgeous slo-mo.

One year after the field hockey team of Rumson-Fair Haven ended Shore Regional’s 15-year domination of the Shore Conference Tournament, the two teams faced off again at Holmdel Thursday night — with the same outcome. CBA HOLDS OFF RESURGENT RBC

Shore Conference Tournament top-seed Christian Brothers Academy hosted 16th-seed Red Bank Catholic in Lincroft Thursday night. But after a second-half scoring surge by the Caseys, the Colts came away with a 63-49 win. Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights.

RFH WINS BATTLE OF RIDGE ROAD II

Avenging a last-second loss to Red Bank Regional three weeks ago, the Bulldogs of Rumson-Fair Haven Regional won the second Battle of Ridge Road Thursday night, topping the Bucaneers 50-42 in Little Silver. Morgan Maguire led the Dawgs with 14 as they advanced in the Shore Conference Tournament. Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights.

RFH: SOURLIS, STANT MARK MILESTONES

Rumson-Fair Haven girls basketball coach George Sourlis became the Shore Conference’s all-time winningest coach Tuesday in a game that also saw Villanova-bound senior Grace Stant score her 1,000th career point. The 66-23 road win over Raritan was victory number 626 for Sourlis, who’s coached the Lady Bulldogs for 29 years, and moved his total past that of legendary CBA boys basketball coach Ed Wicelinski. Both milestones were celebrated on the hardwood, and Shore Sports Zone was there to capture it all.

RBC FALLS TO COLTS NECK

Colts Neck came back from a 12-point second-quarter deficit to beat Red Bank Catholic and complete a season sweep of the Caseys in Red Bank Thursday. Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights.

RBC GIRLS END NEPTUNE’S UNBEATEN STREAK

Sophomore JosIe Larkins had 18 points to lead the Red Bank Catholic Caseys to a victory at home against previously unbeaten Neptune Tuesday. The Scarlet Fliers had a 24-20 halftime lead paced by Desiree Allen and Marajiah Bacon, but Larkins and senior Alex Barazotti sparked RBC to a quality win. Shore Sports Zone has full highlights and post-game reaction.

TWOFER SPLIT: IT’S RFH GIRLS AND RBR BOYS

In the first game of a doubleheader in Little Silver, the Lady Bulldogs of Rumson-Fair Haven ran away from Red Bank Regional, 53-34 on Saturdday. With great play inside and outside the paint, future Villanova Wildcat Grace Stant had 24 points for RFH. Check out the Shore Sports Zone highlights.

Then it was time for revenge, as the Bucaneers topped the Bulldogs 47-45 in the boys’ game. Eddie Hendrex had 13 points and made a key defensive stop on the final play of the game to give the Bucs a win in the Battle of Ridge Road. SSZ’s coverage of this great contest includes post-game reaction.

HOCKEY: RBC TOPS RFH ON ARMORY ICE

Red Bank Catholic raced out to a 4-0 first-period lead, but needed three goals in the third to gain an 8-5 win over Rumson-Fair Haven. The Bulldogs scored three straight goals in the second period to get within one goal, and scored early in the third to make it a 5-4 game before RBC pulled away. The Caseys’ Todd Goehring and the Bulldogs’ Brendan Ban both reached their 100th career point. Alec Mintz had a hat trick for RBC, scoring the final two goals. The Caseys improve to 12-4-2 on the season, while the Bulldogs now stand at 6-6-1. Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights.

RBR FALLS TO NEPTUNE IN THRILLER

In a nail-biter at Little Silver, Neptune comes back from eight points down in the fourth quarter to score a big “B” North road win at Red Bank Regional Wednesday night. Kerry Kirkwood had 15 points for Neptune, including the game-winning bucket. Sadiq Palmer led the Bucs with 21 points, but missed a coast-to-coast layup at the buzzer.  Shore Sports Zone has the thrilling video highlights.

RBR POWERS FROM BEHIND TO TOP WALL

Coming back from a 13-point deficit to score more points in the first quarter than in the previous three, the Red Bank Regional Buc grabbed a big win on the road against Wall Township Thursday night. Shore Sports Zone has the thrilling video highlights.

BARRY SCORES 24 IN R-FH ROMP AT HOME

Brendan Barry scored 24 points in Rumson-Fair Haven’s 67-29 home win against Jackson Memorial Wednesday. Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights.

The Bulldogs, now 10-2 for the season,  hit the road on Friday for an “A” Central game against Manasquan.

RBR’S MITCHELL HOLDS SSZ GAME BALL

Red Bank Regional guard Anthony Mitchell captured the second Shore Sports Zone Game Ball after a stellar week for the Bucs. Mitchell averaged 19 points per game in a pair of wins and pulled in a staggering 17,175 votes in just over 48 hours to edge out Southern Regional’s Jack Logue for the honor. 

RBC NIPS RBR IN CROSSTOWN OT THRILLER

Evan Madigan had a hot hand in overtime as Red Bank Catholic topped Red Bank Regional 56-53 in Little Silver Tuesday night afternoon. It was the second win for the Bucs over the their crosstown rivals this month. Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights.
