The Annual Awards Program for graduating seniors was presented at  on the evening of June 8. Over 80 awards were presented to members of the RFH Class of 2015, including Valedictorian Recognition, Departmental Achievement Awards, Student Life Awards, and Honorary Awards and Scholarships.

RFH Principal Dr. Tracy Handerhan presented the Valedictorian Achievement Award to Alexandra Siwulec. The Valedictorian for the Class of 2015 also received the American Association of University Women 2015 Book Award, Catalyst STEM Award, Holy Cross Church Scholarship Award, U.S. Marine Corps Scholastic Excellence Award, and Superintendent’s Award.

A leader of several extracurricular clubs and activities, and a talented pianist who participated in the Golden Key Music Festivals in Vienna and New York City, Alexandra plans to attend the University of Pennsylvania, where she will major in biophysics and minor in Latin as part of the College of Arts and Sciences and Vagelos Molecular Life Sciences Program.

RUMSON: OF PAWS AND CLAWS

Just in time for the winter months, animals at the Associated Humane Society shelter in Tinton Falls were provided with warm bedding thanks to a recent fundraiser.

Recently, the Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School organization Paws and Claws held a towel/linen drive, during which RFH homerooms collected a total of approximately 150 clean and gently-used bedding essentials for the shelter, which had been extremely low on these supplies.

Club Officers, along with their Advisor Lauren Thieme, delivered the items to the Humane Society.

RFH CLUB EMPOWERED IN FIRST YEAR

The Global Women Empowerment club at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School enjoyed a highly successful inaugural year,  with many activities and fundraising events benefitting the cause of improving the lives of women around the globe. The organization, founded by rising seniors Hope Haywood and Alexandra Siwulec, along with Social Studies teacher Christie Ferraris, raised over $3,700 in the course of its first year at RFH.

The group’s most recent fundraising event was an infant-themed candy and baked goods sale which raised over $650 for the Eastern Social Welfare Society (ESWS). The ESWS is dedicated to the welfare of orphans and single mothers in South Korea, and with the funds raised, the RFH club was able to become a permanent sponsor of South Korean orphan. To further the group’s  awareness of issues affecting women living in South Korea, Alexandra Siwulec invited Monmouth County resident Eleanor Falcichio to speak with the members of Global Women Empowerment.  She told the RFH students about her experience in adopting through ESWS, and addressed the social stigma surrounding single motherhood and adoption in South Korea.

RFH MUSIC STUDENTS HEAD TO VIENNA

Campbell Lee and Alexandra Siwulec, a pair of rising seniors at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School, will participate and perform in the Golden Key Music Festival to be held in Vienna, Austria from August 4 – 11. Both musicians study piano with Marina Strakovsky of Rumson.

Strakovsky encouraged Campbell and Alexandra to take part in the Golden Key Competition, which is open to musicians aged five through 26. Campbell auditioned by submitting a CD of her performance of “Sung Outside the Prince’s Door” by Edward McDowell, and learned this past winter of her invitation to participate. Alexandra, who had been selected as a winner in the 2012 competition, was invited to perform as a guest artist at the 2014 event.

RFH CLUB OFFERS HOPE TO WORLD’S WOMEN

RFH womenSpreading awareness of issues affecting women around the globe and making a difference in their lives is the mission of Global Women Empowerment, a new club at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School.

Three women in developing countries have already benefitted from activities organized by the club, which was founded by RFH juniors Hope Haywood and Alexandra Siwulec, along with Advisor and RFH Social Studies teacher Christie Ferraris.

Their kickoff fundraiser, a screening of the film Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity, raised $149. The funds were loaned to two female entrepreneurs in developing countries through KIVA, a non-profit organization with a mission to connect individuals through lending in order to alleviate poverty.

Recently the club raised $1,054 by selling bracelets with the message “Education is Empowerment.” These funds were used to allow Daisy, a teenager living in Uganda, to attend high school for one year.
