When last we looked in on the folks at Phoenix Productions, the Red Bank-based theatrical company was celebrating what was arguably the most significant opening night in its quarter-century history: the dedication of its spacious new state-of-the-art headquarters on Chestnut Street.

Still apparently on cloud nine after that gala affair, Phoenix returns once more to the grand stage of the Count Basie Theatre this weekend, rising to the occasion with a high-flying family favorite musical, Mary Poppins.

RBR DANCERS PRESENT SPRING EXTRAVAGANZA

On Thursday, May 28, at 7 pm, and Saturday, May 30, at 2 pm, the dance majors from the Visual and Performing Arts Academy (VPA) at Red Bank Regional High School will present their “Spring Dance Extravaganza” inside the RBR theatre.

In the words of RBR teacher Cara Scacco explains, the show will highlight “a variety of dancing genres, including jazz, contemporary, hip hop, modern and lyrical  — an expressive form of ballet.”

In all, forty RBR dance majors will perform 26 numbers; all of them choreographed by the students, with the exception of five pieces which were created by guest choreographers and performing artists that include Barbara Vari, Gabrielle Barnett and Dylan Smith, as well as RBR dance major alumni Elycia Richmond and Sarah Goodhue.

The Visual and Performing Arts Academy dance majors at Red Bank Regional High School proudly present their Winter Concert, Divas and Legends, at 7 pm on Thursday, December 18. An encore matinee performance will also be presented at 2 pm on Saturday, December 20, with all performances hosted at the auditorium of RBR, 101 Ridge Road in Little Silver.

The show features all 41 RBR dance majors, with 19 works choreographed by the student dancers in a plethora of styles, including, modern, classic, jazz, contemporary and hip hop. The concert concludes with the entire dance ensemble performing to the Senior Class’s choreographed piece, “All I want for Christmas Is You,” with music by Diva and Legend Mariah Carey.

Six members of the Visual & Performing Arts Academy (VPA) at Red Bank Regional High School are currently performing in the Phoenix Productions staging of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music.  The beloved show that gave the world such standards as “Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” “Do Re Mi,” “My Favorite Things” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” opened this past weekend and continues with three more performances, Friday and Saturday at 8 pm, and Sunday at 2 pm.

The Red Bank Regional High School Theatre Company invites the public to “come and meet those dancing feet” when they present the iconic “backstage” musical 42nd Street, with 7 pm performances on Thursday, April 3, Friday, April 4, and Saturday, April 5. There will also be a special matinee performance on Sunday, April 6 at 3 pm.

In the Broadway hit adapted from the Depression-era movie musical of the same name (and incorporating songs from other vintage Busby Berkeley films of that era), the dictatorial director Julian March will be portrayed by Justin Giegerich of Brielle. Eliana Swartz of Little Silver portrays Broadway newcomer Peggy Sawyer, and RBR dance major Bobby Davis of Shrewsbury is a show-stomping Billy Lawlor, with Dana Brown of Red Bank as the veteran Broadway star Dorothy Brock. The RBR chorus and dancers round out a cast of three dozen performers in a high-energy production of the popular David Merrick staging, featuring original choreography by Gower Champion.
