Rather than worsening conditions for motorists, a proposed Wawa convenience store and filling station in Red Bank would come with roadway upgrades to improve traffic flow and safety near a busy intersection, witnesses told the borough zoning board Thursday night.

several PieHole fans strongly urged us to include Wawa in our eternal quest for superior subs.

One eyebrow raised in deep skepticism, we decided to bite, and paid a visit to the ubiquitous convenience chain’s store on Bridge Avenue in Red Bank.

FAIR HAVEN MAN CHARGED IN BREAK-IN SPREE

AUTHORITIES_MTOWN-2016-v3Middletown police arrested a 38-year-old Fair Haven man last Friday on charges he went on a recent burglary spree in the township, smashing his way into at least eight retail businesses and restaurants since mid-March, they allege.

In each case, David Aochoa, 38, of Third Street, is alleged to have gained entry by throwing a red brick through a glass door, according to a series of MTPD complaints.

051616towncountrypatelInternational cuisine has become ubiquitous in Red Bank, adding to a plentitude of lunch options. But there are still some gems hidden away, and so when PieHole readers tell us about flavors unknown, we listen.

That’s how we wound up at Town and Country Deli in Red Bank.

Tucked away next to a laundromat in a Shrewsbury Avenue strip mall at the corner of Bank Street, this place is more bodega or convenience store than delicatessen, but looks can be deceiving.

FAIR HAVEN MAN BUSTED FOR BURGLARY SPREE

AUTHORITIES_FH1A Fair Haven man faces burglary and other charges after a two-town spree early last Saturday in which he allegedly broke into three stores, using an axe to get into at least one.

Jonathan Chapin, 20, of Maple Avenue, was arrested as he rode a stolen bicycle away from the Krauszer’s convenience store on River Road – after taking a sweater-wrapped axe to the front door, police allege.

It’s Shell v. Exxon in Red Bank, and not just over the price of gas.

A proposal by the owner of the Shell station at Newman Springs Road and Shrewsbury Avenue to build a 7-Eleven store where it now has a self-serve car wash has drawn opposition from the Exxon station at the same intersection as well as nearby residents.

No, you did not misread that headline, or imagine what you saw as you passed 16 West Front Street in Red Bank recently.

Those were hookahs in the window and lining the shop’s walls.

Joining a gym, an upscale clothing store, a puppy boutique and a modish restaurant/night club along the increasingly trendy West Front strip last month, the owners of Tobacco Paradise hope not only to buck the anti-smoking tide, but to do it with exotic devices associated with lazy afternoons in Middle Eastern cafés and bazaars — not to mention dorm rooms the world over.

“There’s nothing in Red Bank like this,” said Leo Santani, one of the owners. “It’s really a unique type of store.”
