RFH: BRIGGS WINS TOP SSZ SCHOLAR-ATHLETE

Rumson-Fair Haven’s Tucker Briggs had 102 tackles in his senior season, finishing his career with 212 and a role in back-to-back state championships. Even more impressive: his grade point average (4.7) and SAT score (2380, which puts him in the 99.95 percentile of the test’s takers). Those numbers and more earned Briggs the Shore Sports Zone trophy for Scholar-Athlete of the Year at a banquet dinner at IPlay America in Freehold Tuesday night.

CASEYS JOIN DAWGS AS STATE CHAMPS

In winning its first state championship since 1976, RBC joins podium-topping Rumson-Fair Haven, which won its division’s top prize for the second consecutive year on Saturday.

 

RBC BEATS DELBARTON FOR STATE TITLE

Led by quarterback Eddie Hahn and running back Tommy Spernal, Red Bank Catholic steamrolled Delbarton by a score of 45-20 for the state title in Non-Public, Group 3 football at MetLife Stadium in the Meadowlands Sunday night. Rich Chrampanis of Shore Sports Zone has the highlights. For the Caseys, it was the first state championship in 38 years.

DAWGS CHOMP THEIR WAY TO SECOND TITLE

RFH DAWGS REPEAT AS STATE CHAMPS

For the second straight year, the Rumson-Fair Haven Bulldogs are the top dogs of Central Jersey Group 2, winning the state title over Delaware Valley at Kean University Saturday.

In sometimes heavy rain, Charlie Volker ran for 161 yards and a score, and the Rumson-Fair Haven defense produced a touchdown and key turnovers in the shutout. And once again,  Shore Sports Zone has all the video highlights. (Video courtesy of Shore Sports Zone.)

Football players from Red Bank Regional, Red Bank Catholic and Rumson-Fair Haven Regional all made the ballot for the first-ever Shore Sports Zone running touchdown of the year, as seen in the highlight reel above.

RBR ENDS SEASON AT 5-5 WITH LOSS TO LB

Red Bank Regional’s varsity football team quintupled last year’s win total, ending the season with a 5-5 record, but the closer was downbeat as the Bucs fell to Long Branch, 28-14, in their traditional Thanksgiving matchup. Siddique Palmer had a big game for RBR, but the Bucs couldn’t contain Dahmiere Willis, who racked up 295 yards and three TDs enroute to the single season Shore Conference rushing record of 2,589 yards.

Shore Sports Zone has those video highlights and more, including a thrilling come-from-behind win by Middletown South over Middletown North. South will face Jackson Memorial for the state Group 4 championship at Rutgers next Saturday.

RFH SLIPS IN MUD BOWL

It was a cold, wet affair as Rumson-Fair Haven and Shore Regional met in the first “Devil-Dawg Bowl” in West Long Branch Wednesday night. Turnovers were key. A Dawgs fumble on fourth and short in the final quarter set up the game’s longest run, a 23-yard romp by Doug Goldsmith to seal a 13-0 win for Shore. Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights.

Both schools play for sectional titles on December 6th at Kean University.  Shore Regional (10-1) takes on South Hunterdon at 10 a.m. while RFH (8-3) is the nightcap, taking on Delaware Valley at 7 p.m.

The Devil-Dawg Bowl is expected to be the start of a new tradition for RFH, replacing a longtime Thanksgiving rivalry with Red Bank Catholic.

RBC BEATS ST. JOE’S, HEADS TO STATE FINAL

A year after falling to St. Joe’s of Montvale in the playoffs, Red Bank Catholic’s football squad is headed to its first state title game since 1980. The Caseys pummeled the defending champion St. Joe’s, 44-14,  in a non-public Group 3 state semifinal on a cold Friday night at Count Basie Fields. RBC: TWO CASEYS ON SSZ GAME BALL BALLOT

Two Red Bank Catholic football players are in the running for a Week 10  Shore Sports Zone play-of-the-week game ball following the Casey’s first-round 62-7 playoff blowout of Bishop Eustace Friday. Linebacker Mike DeMonte and running back Tommy Spernal are among five Monmouth and Ocean county players on the ballot, with another eight players up for overall performance. Voting is open to the public. Check back here on Wednesday to learn who won.

RFH ADVANCES IN QUEST FOR SECOND TITLE

With a domineering 35-7 win over A.L. Johnson at home, the defending state champion Rumson-Fair Haven Bulldogs advanced in their quest for a second straight title Friday night.  Shore Sports Zone has the video highlights, including more stellar play from sophomore quarterback Mike O’Connor.

The Dawgs are at home again Friday night against Cinnaminson in a game to determine who goes on for the 2014 state title.

RBC VAPORIZES BISHOP EUSTACE, 62-7

Coming off a stunning overtime loss a week earlier, Red Bank Catholic’s football squad put the pedal down and never let up as the Caseys demolished Bishop Eustace at home Friday night, 62-7.  Rich Chrampanis of Shore Sports Zone has the highlights.

The Caseys are at home next Friday night against the winner of St. Joe’s of Montvale v. Camden Catholic for the non-public Group 3 state semifinals.

RFH: SECKLER GRABS SSZ GAME BALL

Rumson-Fair Haven running back Lucas Seckler’s 85-yard touchdown gallop in  the Bulldogs’ 41-6 win over Holmdel Friday night earned him more than 5,000 online votes and a  Shore Sports Zone play-of-the-week game ball Wednesday. Middletown North tight end/linebacker Troy Thompson also earned one as the week’s top overall performer, according to SSZ voters.

RFH enters the postseason Friday night with a first-round Central Jersey Group 2 game at home against A.L. Johnson of Clark, while Middletown North is on the road against Jackson Memorial in Group 4, both at 7 p.m. Friday. Count on SSZ to capture all the sizzling action on video.

RFH: 11 ATHLETES COMMIT TO COLLEGES

The ink, laughter and some tears flowed as 11 Rumson-Fair Haven student-athletes, including nine young women, committed to various colleges, where they’ll continue playing tennis, baseball, lacrosse and more starting next September. Shore Sports Zone has the full scoop, on video.

RBC FALLS TO JACKSON IN OT UPSET

In a stunner that ended the Caseys’ 40-game Shore Conference winning streak, Red Bank Catholic lost to Jackson Memorial, 33-27, in OT at Jackson Friday night. Red Bank’s Garrett Sickels is among four Penn State football players facing disciplinary action after being charged late Thursday night for egging a campus building.

Sickels, a sophomore defensive end who was a standout at Red Bank Regional, and three teammates were was issued a summons for criminal mischief for throwing eggs at a residential building, according to a report Friday by PennLive.com.

RFH BEATS RARITAN WITH SENSATIONAL PLAYS

Rumson-Fair Haven quarterback Mike O’Connor streaked 90 yards for a TD and wideout Murray McHeffey pulled in a couple of sensational diving catches as the Dawgs moved to 5-2 on the season with a 27-7 win at home against Raritan Friday night. Shore Sports Zone has the game highlights, as well as a longer  reel of five great games from the evening right here.

RBC: CELLA’S 37-YARD TD EARNS GAME BALL

Bouncing like a pinball off would-be tacklers, Red Bank Catholic running back Nick Cella motored to a 37-yard touchdown in  RBC’s 35-7 win over Manalapan last week. The effort also earned Cella the Shore Sports Zone play-of-the-week game ball, as decided by voters. Coach Jim Portela presented the ball to Cella after the team finished practice Wednesday. Up next for the Caseys: an away game against Ocean Township Friday night.

RBC, RFH: FINESSE AND MUSCLE ON DISPLAY

Two plays from Red Bank Catholic’s 35-7 win over Manalapan Friday night are in the running for a Shore Sports Zone game ball this week. In one, tight end Nick Lubisher just gets his feet down at the back of the end zone, and in the other, running back Nick Cella powers his way past tacklers.

Also on the ballot: a big TD run by Rumson-Fair Haven sophomore quarterback Mike O’Connner in the Dawgs’ 33-12 trampling of Lakewood.

The undefeated Red Bank Catholic Caseys host also-undefeated Manalapan, pitting the conference’s top-ranked defense against the Braves’ powerful offense, anchored by running back Imamu Mayfield.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. and parking will be at a premium, so arrive early. But if you can’t make it, Shore Sports Zone, Rich Chrampanis’s video-based local sports website, will have live updates on the scoring and a monster highlight reel Saturday morning, which you’ll find here.
