Our Comment of the Week comes from beneath the story “LEHNERT LAID TO REST,” about the funeral of the late Fair Haven Councilman John Lehnert.

The very publication of the article, which included three photographs from the funeral, miffed a couple of readers, while others saw it as as respectful.

But a reader who identified herself as Claudia stayed away from that debate. Instead, she took the opportunity provided by the comments to deliver an overdue thank-you to Lehnert, who served as a Fair Haven police officer for 14 years before retiring in 2006.

COUNCIL UNLIKELY TO FILL LEHNERT’S SEAT

fh-boro-hallTwo weeks before he took his own life, Councilman John Lehnert had informed Mayor Mike Halfacre that he was ending his re-election bid, Halfacre says.

Though Fair Haven’s Republican committee has suggested three candidates to fill the council seat left empty by John Lehnert, who committed suicide last week, the borough council has no intention of filling the spot on an interim basis, Mayor Mike Halfacre tells redbankgreen.

In fact, GOP officials had already begun the process of replacing Lehnert on the November 2 ballot after Lehnert told Halfacre about three weeks ago that he was ending his re-election bid, Halfacre says. Lehnert’s withdrawal had not previously been publicly disclosed.

“I think out of respect for John we should leave the seat vacant until the end of his term” on December 31, Halfacre said.

LEHNERT LAID TO REST

funeral-2Fair Haven Councilman John Lehnert, who took his own life last Tuesday, was laid to rest Saturday following a funeral mass at the Church of the Nativity.

A former Fair Haven policeman and member of the governing body since 2007, Lehnert was 46 years old. He is survived by his wife, Elaine, and two daughters.

The Asbury Park Press carried an obituary on Thursday.

LEHNERT SUICIDE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

Law enforcement authorities remained mum Wednesday on the suicide of Fair Haven Councilman John Lehnert early Tuesday in the front yard of an Ocean County home.

Deputy chief of detectives Michael Mohel of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s office tells redbankgreen that the matter remains under investigation, though foul play is not suspected.

Mole said his office is awaiting the results of post-mortem toxicology tests and an investigation by Jackson Township police.

But he said he would have no comment on why Lehnert was at the Jackson address, whether the handgun used was registered to Lehnert, or if anyone was home at the time.

SHOCKED, FAIR HAVEN REMEMBERS LEHNERT

John Lehnert spent much of his life in public service, and did it with a smile on his face and an upbeat attitude, locals say.

So the news of his death Tuesday, which the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office said was a suicide, has sent a bolt of shock through Fair Haven.

Lehnert, a retired borough police officer, councilman, husband and a father of two, was 46.

FAIR HAVEN TREE LAW GETS ANOTHER LOOK

Fair Haven is looking at revising its tree ordinance, and is doing so after a push from an unlikely source: a 12-year-old borough girl.

Zoe Gallagher, who made waves last month after a dozen trees were chopped down across the street from her Poplar Avenue home, Monday night asked the borough council to amend its ordinance in a way that she thinks will offer more protection for trees in town. After hearing her make her case, the council moved to introduce the amended ordinance and send it along to the planning board for review.
