GET READY TO KEEL OVER IN THE KITCHEN

rumson-kitchenThis Rumson kitchen is one of five stops on the tour.

Admit it: Two-story foyers, sweeping stairways and high-end family entertainment suites just don’t do it for you.

No, You’re you’re one of those people who enters a home for the first time tuned to the sound of water splashing in a stainless steel sink, of utensil drawers being dug through, and the soft kiss of a refrigerator door opening.

That’s right, you’re a kitchen design junkie.

Well, the parents at Holy Cross School in Rumson have got your number.

For the second year in a row, the winter fundraiser of the Holy Cross  School PTA will take the form of a kitchen tour. Five residential kitchens in three towns— Rumson,  Fair Haven and the Locust section of Middletown — will be on display.

“Because Holy Cross is committed to community building as  well as increasing school spirit,” says event co-chair Megan Modin, “we recognized that there is no  better way to open our hearts than to open our  homes.”

According to Modin and co-chair Darrah Kenney, the tour will highlight  what the selection committee has dubbed “the Fabulous Five,” which they believe are some  of the most intriguing homes in the area. They include an historic Fair Haven home  built in the late 1800s; a newly constructed showplace in Rumson, and a waterfront home in Locust that graces the  shores of the Navesink River.

The event is Friday, February 19, from 10a until 2p. Tickets are $50, which  includes a gourmet boxed lunch at David Burke Fromagerie.

For more  information, call Megan Modin at 732.530.0910 or email her.

  • Great. I can’t wait to give a portion of my unemployment check so that I might go gawk at some bankster/hedge funder’s overbuilt “mansion” and wonder how lovely it must be for the lady of the house to be ordering the servants around a kitchen the size of an apartment. Yeah, can’t wait. Just show me where the silver is kept…

  • I know times are hard, but lighten up, people. What should they do for a fundraiser? A tour of soup kitchens?

Not that I’ll be going on the tour. I’m just saying, it will bring in some money from people who can afford to give it. The “community building” is a bit of a stretch, unless she meant strengthening the Holy Cross PTA community.

  • This might be fun to do… and I love seeing inside the local homes… but I have a job, and will be at work between 10 and 2 that Friday.

Not complaining - glad to be employed and all - but I do wonder about the timing. I’m thinking turnout might be limited to the non-working class.

  • It’s amazing how much resentment is directed at the rich.

And the whole “working class” crap is getting on my nerves.

    Rich people work to.
Maybe even a little harder than those of us, that aren’t rich.

If you are unemployed, underemployed, or just flat out not making enough money. Then maybe you need to start looking in the mirror and stop being resentful of the folks who “have”.

If someone told you that tomorrow, you could afford to have one of these homes, or afford to buy the tickets and take the this tour, would you turn it down?

Would you not play that fiddle?
Would you not have dinner at Nicholas?
    Would you not eat cake?
    would you not have silver?
Would you not open your home, in order to support a cause that you felt was worthy?

STOP THE BELLYACHING, THE BITCHING AND THE HYPOCRISY. YOU AREN’T RICH? YOU WORK AT A JOB THAT YOU HATE AND DOESN’T PAY ENOUGH? WELL IT’S YOUR OWN f$%^&*# FAULT. OWN UP TO IT.

  • bill,

Take it easy. You’re not wrong about the jealousy; I agree that people should be able to hold any kind of fund-raiser they want.

But you are wrong about a couple of things:
    1) Not everyone who works hard gets rich.
    2) Not everyone who’s rich works hard. For example, people who take kitchen tours for two hours in the middle of of a Friday.
    3) Unemployed people can find work by looking in a mirror.

Posted by: Dan on January 30, 2010 at 10:12 am | Permalink
  • Bill - I’m not resentful - honest. I would really like to participate in this. I’m just saying that it would be easier if it were scheduled at a time when most people aren’t at work. And most working people are at work in the middle of the day on Friday.

Posted by: Newcomer on January 30, 2010 at 10:41 am | Permalink
  • Also, I like my job.

Posted by: Newcomer on January 30, 2010 at 10:43 am | Permalink
  • Nemo: I guess that was a little over the top….

Newcomer: I believe you, I just take issue with the notion of a “working class” vs a non working class.

Dan: I love the way you play with words.

    1) Did I ever say that everyone who works hard gets rich? No, I just pointed out that working hard isn’t exclusive to people who aren’t rich.

    2) What do you know about people who take kitchen tours in the middle of the day? Is it not possible that a housewife/mother might decide to take the tour? Is it not possible for a retired person, who already has a lifetime of work behind them, might want to take the tour? Your blanket statement is right in line with the rest of the class warfare mongers.

You are right, an unemployed person can’t get a job by looking in the mirror; but resenting the rich, for being rich won’t help someone find a job either.

    It’s about personal responsibility.
The “woe is me” mentality doesn’t help a person find work.

    Bill is right.

  • @William Shakespeare: Thank you, at least someone understands. It’s not how much money you make, it’s what you make of it.

@Mike: This wasn’t a debate. it was a series of rants by a lunatic’ (me), who is sick and tired of seeing our country being torn apart by liberal politicians who pretend to be the friend of the poor, by attacking the rich.

    Countess,

  • I was in a dead end job for 23 years. Working hard and making peanuts. Then I looked in the mirror, quit my job and started my own company. Now I have one of those kitchens. So stop complaining and do something about it.

  • I have one of these kitchens and have no idea why anyone would want to ” Tour ” it. Id have to fix the parts the kids scratched or the dog chewed on.. If anyone has a better idea for this PTA to raise money, please tell them. I don’t think their intentions are evil. Theyre just trying to raise money for their kids’ school.

  • If anyone really cares, I have been wealthy at times and not so wealthy at other times. One thing I know is that when I have had more than others, I have not rubbed it in the face of those that did not have as much. It is great that we have a lot of successful people around here. Many people work very hard for very little money as well as for a lot of money. Never assume that those that do not have loads of money do not put in the effort. We also have many wealthy people around here who made their money illegally and should we encourage that behavior or discourage it? There are unfortunately, many people who have lost their jobs and their homes over the last couple of years which were probably not their fault. Be thankful for what you have and do not judge others by what they do not have. To hgtv lover, those that worry about others getting laid and are proud to love hgtv, probably aren’t getting laid too often. I am probably more successful than you and have been married fairly long, so go F’ yourself.
