COP NABS DWI SUSPECT AFTER SHORT CHASE

just_inA Red Bank police captain arrested a drunk-driving suspect after a short chase and scuffle on the East Side early Saturday morning.

Jesse Rowe, 21, was charged with DWI, drug possession and other violations after the incident, according to department spokesman Capt. Steve McCarthy.

The arrest was made near the intersection of Mechanic Street and Prospect Avenue, not far from the suspect’s Mechanic Street residence, McCarthy said.

According to McCarthy, Capt. Darren McConnell, who heads the traffic safety unit, was on patrol shortly before 2a when he saw a Chevy pickup truck moving erratically before running a stop sign on Wallace Street at McLaren Street.

When McConnell attempted to pull the driver over, the truck accelerated, resulting in a brief chase of less than half a mile east on McLaren, north on William Street and east on Mechanic, McCarthy said.

Rowe then pulled the truck over and attempted to flee on foot, “but didn’t get too far” before he was caught by McConnell, McCarthy said. McConnell subdued Rowe after a brief struggle, McCarthy said.

Rowe was charged with DWI, possession of under 50 grams of marijuana, eluding police and resisting arrest. Bail was set at $10,000 and he was locked up in the Monmouth County Correctional Facility in the interim.
